RMIT University, School of Media and Communication Design

Housed in RMIT’s Building 9, the project was about creating a new home for the School of Media and Communication – a school that was previously spread over ten buildings locations within RMIT’s Melbourne Campus.

Met with the challenge of a functional programme much larger than the available area led to a cross-discipline and highly flexible (in use) learning space solution. It is now utilised as an exemplar model across the campus.

The School teaches Advertising, Communication, Communication Design, Editing and Publishing, Journalism, Media and Public Relations. The design outcomes represent industry best practice in the convergence of all disciplines taught within the school.

Multi-purpose collaborative learning spaces supported by highly interactive audio-visual technology, enabled appropriate and flexible work environments meeting University space standards. Additionally, the academic workspace approach was re-engineered creating a new open plan vs. enclosed office paradigm.
