Strategic Reuse of Existing Architecture
In 2023, Spowers was engaged to revitalise the Chancellery offices at La Trobe University’s Bundoora campus. The brief called for a more efficient, collaborative workplace for the Senior Executive and their partners. The Chancellery needed an invigorated office that could support more users, and reflect the University’s values of openness and transparency.
Space Optimisation and Workplace Transformation
Working within the constraints of the existing architecture, the project focused on strategic insertions that significantly enhanced workplace utilisation. Underperforming zones were reimagined to include a broader range of collaboration areas, small to medium meeting spaces, and shared environments that encouraged use by the wider executive group, whilst responding to a post-covid workplace paradigm.
Alignment with University Policy and Culture
The upgrade aligned with the organisation’s Space Optimisation policy, demonstrating how existing assets can be reworked to meet evolving needs and future workplace practices. Architectural moves were carefully considered to maximise access to natural light, open up sightlines across the floorplate, and promote connection to the surrounding campus.
Performance and Amenity Upgrades
Thermal comfort, acoustic performance and AV integration were all improved to ensure the spaces were functional and future-ready. A refreshed palette of furniture, finishes and colour brought new life to the interiors while remaining sensitive to the original design language.
Celebrating Legacy Through Design
As a final gesture, the Leonard French-stained glass artwork was relocated as a striking centrepiece at the entry, symbolising the transformation and heralding a renewed sense of purpose..
