Commissioned by Queensland Racing and Eureka Funds Management, Spowers’ proposal completely redefined the place of the Gold Coast Turf Club in Australian racing. Not only providing a racecourse but and urban centre.
The proposal to maximise the entertainment aspect of the enormous site, reflecting the Gold Coast reputation for recreation. Included was Queensland’s Fourth Casino, a 5-star Hotel, an 18-hole Golf Course, a train link to the main Brisbane-Robina rail link, 6 residential apartment towers, a shopping mall, offices, and an expanded Magic Millions sales complex.
With a maximum capacity of 50,000 patrons plus a 12,000 seated grandstand, the club’s long-term vision for future was addressed through flexible use of spaces with events facilities and a joint venture development of commercial parcels over a ten year period.
The Gold Coast Bulletin described the Turf Club proposal as ‘The World’s Greatest Racecourse!’
